New scientific article about lithium pegmatite mineralization in the Nordic countries
As part of the EU-funded project Exploration Information System (EIS), the Geological Survey of Sweden (SGU), the Geological Survey of Finland (GTK), and Luleå University of Technology (LTU) have collaborated to understanding of so-called mineral systems related to lithium mineralization in Sweden and Finland.
–This joint effort has recently resulted in a scientific review article published in the international journal Ore Geology Reviews, says Martiya Sadeghi, SGU’s project leader for the EIS project and the Västernorrland bedrock mapping project.
From SGU, senior geologists and researchers Edward Lynch (first author) and Martiya Sadeghi initiated and contributed to the article, which summarizes current research findings and models on how lithium mineralizations formed, as well as the geological criteria required for this type of mineralization in the Nordic region.
In addition, SGU has contributed with new geological mapping in Västernorrland county, focusing on better understanding the evolution of the bedrock and structural setting in the Swedish part of the Bothnian Basin. This mapping has enabled comparisons with the corresponding geological setting on the Finnish side, further strengthening the cross-border exchange of knowledge within the framework of the project.
The published article provides an important foundation for future exploration and research related to critical raw materials in northern Europe.
