SGU does several collaborations with other governmental agencies and organisations, including international institutions.
Geodata collaborations are done to provide an easier access to geodata. Organisations with governmental assignments get access to a large range of geodata. Cooperation is governed by an agreement regulating the conditions for the supply and use of geodata. The agreement also regulates organisation, governance and accountability of the geodata.
SGU participates in several international projects as a basis to share experiences and knowledge.
MinLand is an EU project designed to meet challenges concerning competing land use planning related to different land-use interests. Securing access to land for exploration and extraction of minerals, including critical raw materials, in an integrated and optimized process, is of great importance.
“Fennoscandian Ore Deposit Database” is a database and a map with description of areas with mineral deposits and probable future metal ore discoveries in the Fennoscandian Shield. The maps and the database have been compiled in a joint project between the geological surveys in Finland, Norway, Russia and Sweden. The database contains information on nearly 1,700 mines, deposits and important events in the region. The map (picture) was published in December 2009 and updated in March 2013. The latest update of the database was done in January 2013.
The main goal of the research project "EURARE" is to increase the awareness of the rare earth metals (rare earth elements, REE) and to reduce the EU's dependence on imports of these strategically important minerals. The minerals are used extensively in modern technology and green technology. Sweden has Europe’s main deposits of rare earths, but today there is no extraction in Europe. The EU is today totally dependent on China, which today accounts for about 95 percent of all rare earths in the world. The idea is for the EU to build up the skills and resources to secure the EU's future supply of these strategic minerals in a resource-efficient and environmentally friendly way.
GEMAS (Geochemical Mapping of Agricultural and Grazing Land Soil) is a transnational cooperation project between the geochemical expert groups in the EuroGeoSurveys (EGS), where SGU is included, and the European Association of Metals (Eurometaux) with 33 participating European countries. The main objective is to establish the geochemical background of farmland and pastures in Europe.
GEMAS provides European harmonised geochemical data of high quality for cultivated farmland and unmanaged grazing (unmanaged at least one decade).
SCRREEN intends to strengthen Europe's critical raw materials strategy over the span of 30 months. Raw materials are crucial to Europe's economy and essential to maintaining and improving our quality of life. The SCRREEN project (Solution for Critical Raw Materials - a European Expert Network) will form a network to manage the sustainable supply and policy issues related to EU's potential primary and secondary resources of critical materials. Primary resources refer to geological mineral resource and metal potential, whereas the secondary resources refer to recycling and recovery of metal potential in waste, such as scrap and mine tailings.
