Geology in society

One of SGU’s most important tasks is to meet the needs of society – companies, organizations, authorities and others – for geological information.

To be able to build, plan, search for resources and so on, we need knowledge and information about the geology round about us. What types of bedrock and superficial deposits are present, for example, and what properties do they have? Where can we find different mineral deposits? How large are our groundwater resources and how does water flow through the ground? What concentrations of different substances are present in soils? And what does the seabed look like?

How geological information can be used

SGU offers basic information about the geology of Sweden. To explain how it can be used, and to help you find your way to relevant databases and more in-depth texts, we have described in greater detail eight different areas in which our information can be put to work (you will find the links in the navigation bar to the left):

  • Minerals
  • Planning and building
  • Groundwater
  • Energy and climate
  • Hazards
  • Environment
  • Agriculture, forestry and fisheries
  • Nature conservation
