Regional geological and geophysical maps of Bergslagen and the surrounding areas
SGU’s printed maps of Bergslagen at the scale 1:400 000 have been compiled on the basis of existing information on the bedrock of the area, supplemented with new geological and geophysical data, such as age determinations and the results of geochemical analyses and petrophysical studies. The aim has been, above all, to enhance our understanding of the structural geological and volcanological development of the region.
The Bedrock Map is a synthesis of information, available up to March 2001, that concern the different rock types in Bergslagen and the surrounding areas.
The Metamorphic, Structural and Isotope Map is primarily designed to present the large-scale structural features of the region. Three different structural domains are distinguished:
- Those only affected by an early phase of mountain building, approx. 1870–1800 million years ago (Svecokarelian), during which rocks were altered by changes in pressure and temperature (a process known as metamorphism) and underwent ductile deformation.
- Those also affected by younger mountain-building processes.
- Those virtually unaffected by such processes.
This map shows deformation zones and the occurrence of axial planes to major fold structures. It also shows sites where there are key metamorphic minerals, i.e. minerals that have been used to determine the pressure and temperature at which metamorphism occurred. In addition, age determinations of the parent rocks are shown.
The Mineral Resources Map is a compilation of data on the mineral and bedrock resources of the Bergslagen area recorded up to August 2005. Larger deposits, with available data on their size, are shown on an inset map. Another inset map shows larger areas, discovered to date, where the bedrock has been altered by hot circulating fluids – a process known as hydrothermal alteration, which is often linked to ore formation. That such a process had occurred in this area was demonstrated as recently as the early 1980s.
A description to accompany the maps has also been published.
The Bergslagen maps are also available in digital format for the most commonly used GIS software, ArcMap and MapInfo, at a cost of SEK 20 000.
The Bedrock Map of Bergslagen is also included in one of our exploration packages, Exploration Package Bergslagen, along with other information relevant to mineral exploration, e.g. character of mineral deposits, geophysical and geochemical data. The package, which is supplied on CD, costs SEK 24 000. Similar packages already exist for the Skellefte Field and Norrbotten, the other two important metallogenic provinces of Sweden.
The older maps on which the Bergslagen maps are based can also be purchased, in printed form or as digital databases.

Many applications
SGU’s bedrock maps and databases have a wide range of applications. They provide a basis, above all, for mineral exploration, but also for construction projects, environmental protection, extraction of geothermal energy, and exploration for rocks suitable for monumental stonework or as a substitute for natural gravel. They are also a useful source of information for anyone wanting to gain a more general understanding of the bedrock geology of an area.
