Synthesis of the bedrock geology in the Bergslagen region, Fennoscandian Shield, south-central Sweden

The Bergslagen region in south-central Sweden forms one of Europe's important provinces for the exploitation of metallic mineral deposits, with three currently operating mines at the base metal sulphide deposits Garpenberg, Zinkgruvan and Lovisagruvan.

Ba 58 (the cover)

The synthesis of the bedrock geology in this region, presented by the Geological Survey of Sweden (SGU) in the recently published report 'Synthesis of the bedrock geology in the Bergslagen region, Fennoscandian Shield, south-central Sweden' (Ba 58), complements the regional geophysical and geological maps that were published by SGU during 2002 and 2007, respectively, and the various digital databases with bedrock geological information that were compiled and released for public usage during 2001.

The synthesis in SGU Ba 58 addresses firstly the character, spatial distribution, geochronology, geochemical signature, petrophysical characteristics and regional geophysical signature of the different rock units. The mineral and bedrock deposits in the region are subsequently described. Considerable attention in the later part of the report is placed on the different structural domains and the complex, multiphase ductile strain in the region as well as the character and origin of Svecokarelian metamorphism. A conceptual driving mechanism for the tectonic evolution of Bergslagen for the time period between 1.9 and 1.8 Ga is proposed.

The synthesis and map compilation work have made use of primary data available in various databases at SGU as well as in published descriptions. The results of the detailed geological investigations in the north-eastern part of the region around Forsmark, carried out by SGU on a commission basis for the Swedish Nuclear Fuel and Waste Management Company (SKB), have also been utilized. These investigations were concerned with the characterization of a possible site for the disposal of highly radioactive spent nuclear fuel. The work has also involved the acquirement of new data that have radically updated several databases or even generated, for the first time, digital cartographic information at a scale of resolution of 1:250 000. Furthermore, new data have been acquired concerning the physical volcanology and age of the metamorphosed, volcanic and subvolcanic intrusive rocks, the stratigraphic relationships between this important ore-bearing unit and surrounding metasedimentary rocks, and the structural geology in different domains inside the Bergslagen region.
