Bedrock and mineral deposits in the Bergslagen region

The Bergslagen region in south-central Sweden forms one of Europe's important provinces for the exploitation of metallic mineral deposits, with three currently operating mines at the base metal sulphide deposits Garpenberg, Zinkgruvan and Lovisagruvan. The synthesis of the bedrock geology in this region, presented by SGU in the recently published report 'Synthesis of the bedrock geology in the Bergslagen region, Fennoscandian Shield, south-central Sweden' (Ba 58), complements the regional geophysical and geological maps that were published by SGU during 2002 and 2007, respectively, and the various digital databases with bedrock geological information that were compiled and released for public usage during 2001.

Swedish mining delegation to Namibia

A Swedish MeetingPoints Mining delegation is visiting Namibia in September, to stimulate sustainable partnerships between the Swedish mining sector and its Namibian counterparts. The delegation will meet the Ministry of Mines and Energy, the directorates of Mines and Geological Survey, the National Planning Commission, the Chamber of Mines, miners unions and the industry.

The research report "Early Holocene faulting and paleoseismicity in northern Sweden" summarises multi-year studies of the major faults created in the Earth's crust as the most recent ice sheet melted, and the effects on soil strata of associated earthquakes.

A platform for cooperation between the minerals sector of Sweden and southern Africa

SGU is starting the project MeetingPoints Mining with a view to establish long-term relationships between the Swedish minerals sector and its counterparts in southern Africa. The principal countries involved are Botswana, Namibia and South Africa.
