Magnetic declination
The map below shows magnetic declination, i.e. the angle formed between a magnetic needle (magnetic north) and the geographical meridian (geographical north) for Scandinavia given in degrees (positive eastward) for the year 2008. The isogonic map is compiled from dense ground-based geomagnetic data (on-, off-shore). Local geomagnetic disturbances may occur.
Owing to variations in the geomagnetic field, declination varies with time. Its daily changes are in the order of about 0.1 to 0.4 degrees. During times of increased activity, i.e. so-called magnetic storms, declination may vary up to several degrees for some hours or even some days. Annual declination changes in Scandinavia are about 0.1 to 0.2 degrees.
