Research and development
The main purpose of SGU’s research and development programme is to develop new knowledge and methods and to assimilate them into the agency’s activities. This is achieved both through internally financed research and through a government appropriation for geoscience research carried out at universities.
Support for geoscience research
Since 1990 SGU has provided funding of SEK 5 million a year for applied geoscience research, with the aim of achieving a systematic and long-term strengthening of geoscientific expertise and improving SGU’s capacity to provide society with the geoscience information it requires.
Great importance is attached to interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary research that offers opportunities to apply new approaches and methods.
Research projects currently in progress are looking, for example, at how the bedrock in different areas of Sweden formed, the use of image analysis for assessments of the quality of rock material, various aspects of environmental geology, and the release of heavy metals from acid sulphate soils.
Own-funded R&D
The purpose of SGU’s own research and development is to develop and implement new knowledge, methods, processes, systems and products. The results are published in internal reports and national and international journals. Once a year SGU arranges two seminar days which are open to the public.
