COGEOENVIRONMENT OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
for exceptional efforts accomplished in the field of environmental geology
The Outstanding Achievement Award was initiated by COGEOENVIRONMENT in 1996 to recognise those Corresponding Members who have made exceptional contributions to environmental geology, and to the goals of this Commission.
Nominations for this award on behalf of Corresponding Members can be made by any other Corresponding Member. Please contact the Secretary General for further details.

Dr. Vinod Agrawal
Awarded too, Vinod for his untiring efforts in national environmental geology affairs in India, where he has very effectively promoted the discipline through conferences, workshops, and student competitions. His regular contributions to the Newsletter are well known by all members.

Dr David Elliot
David has been instrumental in his efforts in Canada to secure funding and manage publication of the highly successful Commission Brochure Planning and Managing the Human Environment: The Essential Role of the Geosciences which he has helped publish not only in English but also in Russian.

Dr. G.J.H. McCall
Joe is well known to many other Corresponding Members for his active role in urban geologic research and is currently Chairman of the successful Working Group on Urban Geology, and Senior Editor with Dr E de Mulder and Dr B.Marker of the 1996 text entitled Urban Geoscience.

Dr. Brian Marker
Brian Marker has been actively involved in the fields of Environmental Geology for some considerable time and before the Commission was created. For many years now he has held a senior position in the United Kingdom Department of the Environment and has been responsible for involving the geosciences in UK legislation. He is author and co-author of many publications dealing with the practical and applied aspects of environmental geosciences. He recently coordinated a set of publications on Environmental Geology in Land Use Planning including one entitled Environmental Geology in Land Use Planning - A Guide to Good Practice. The Commission owes a lot to Brian because of his critical but always very constructive comments on many of our publications, including our Brochures, which have contributed a lot to the performance of the Commission, particularly in the non-geoscience world.

Dr. Jonas Satkunas
Jonas is a hydrologist and engineering geologist by training and the Deputy
Director of the Lithuanian Geological Survey based in Vilnius, Lithuania.
He has been active in the field of environmental geology for a number
of years including lecturing at Vilnius University; participating in INQUA
sub-commissions, the Syd-Norden Programme, and ProGEO. Most recently Jonas
spearheaded the successful Workshop on Geoindicators held in Lithuania
during 11-16 October 1999.

Dr Cathleen May
The IUGS Commission on Geological Sciences for Environmental Planning
is pleased to announce Dr Cathleen May is the recipient for 2000 of our
Outstanding Achievement Award for distinguished service in the field of
environmental geology. Cathleen is a palaeontologist by training and since
1998 when she joined the Geological Society of America as Director for
Policy and Environmental Issues she has rapidly become a respected advocate
of many aspects of environmental geoscience. Cathleen rose to the position
of Chief Science Officer in the GSA and as part of her activities she
has enthusiastically and successfully promoted aspects of geoscience that
have assisted considerably in advancing understanding, both within the
scientific community and in the general public, of the essential role
of geoscience in environmental issues.
