General information
Search is conducted as simple, which means free-text search, or advanced, which means field search. Various options are available through lookup menues (so called list boxes).

Advice and service:
Generally: georegister@sgu.se
Register and search: Sten-Anders Smeds; +46 18 17 9145;
sten-anders.smeds@sgu.se

Highlight notes:
1) You can see a presentation of the number of hits on top of first result page.
2) You can browse search terms and read the frequencies.
3) You may choose among three result presentation formats for the documents.

Notice also that the database GeoRegister is about Sweden in Swedish and is the same no matter which language (English or Swedish) is used on the search Web pages. The search words must be in Swedish (unless hits are wanted for documents through titles or abstracts in English or German etc.) even if the search fields are named in English.

Common search rules
The search interface is based on menues (list boxes). One important consequence is that field names do not need to be written explicitly in the search boxes.

The case of typed letters are normally immaterial but lower case is recommended, especially as the boolean and/or/not in ”Advanced search” must be in lower case! Parentheses may be used to group search words. Truncation mark (*) may be put anywhere. Pure right truncation is however the only one that gives reasonable fast response time.

Please note: Right truncation with an asterisk is strongly recommended for most search terms.

A special misspelling search mode is allowed by a deviation of exactly one character per word, such as e.g. Tornquist or Tornqvist. This option is implemented as a check box.

Please note: Do not use truncation i.e. asterisks in combination with the ”Misspelling allowed” box checked.

At the bottom of each result page you may extend your query to get more or fewer hits.

Map search
The Map Search Page shows a small scaled map over Sweden and a covering grid net. Grid size is 50 kilometers. You point and click at one square at a time and a search is immediately performed where the map sheet field (KBL) equals the choosen map sheet code. An Advanced search is performed, e.g. on 04C* as Terms and Map sheet as Field.

Simple search
This is a free-text search mode and there are three alternatives in the list box:

1) ”phrase search” means that you search on the whole phrase and nothing else (no boolean operators)
2) ”all the words” means that you search for documents where all the search words are included (and-search)
3) ”any of the words” means that you serach for documents that include at least one of the search words (or-search)

On top of the the first presentation page the query is printed and at the bottom of the last page you may extend your query, even with a fielded search, by changing the field from e.g. ”All text” to ”Title” or ”Keyword” etc. for the same search term.

A click on a title will show the document in ”full record” format.

Advanced Search
This page is meant for field search but free-text search is also possible. Up to three fields, alternatively two fields + ”All text”, may be involved in the same search.

For each selected search field (see list of fields) you may enter a list of search words in the box named ”Terms”. This word list differs from the one in ”Simple search” because you may explicitly enter ”or”, ”and” and ”not” as boolean operators between the search words. The alternative is to use another of the three field rows, use the same field and choose an operator from the list box to the right. Citation marks are needed for this kind of ”phrase search”.

Please note: The operators and/or/not must be written with non-capital letters.

Between the three available field rows you must choose a boolean operator from the list boxes.

You may even choose presentation format (”brief”, ”normal”, ”full records”) on the result pages. Default is ”brief”. Clicks on titles allways give documents in ”full records” format.

The option ”Hits per page” let you control the Web page size. With different combinations of format you can arrange the result pages conveniently for scanning or printing.

Tip: Click full records format and 100 hits per page to show a connected list of hits (try even the browser's Find).

When neither web page or browser shows an back arrow then right click and choose Back.

List of fields:

7 Keyword / Nyckelord / NYC
8 Geographical keyword / Geografiska namn / GGN

14 Archive address / Arkivadress / ARK
15 Coordinates / Koordinater / KOO
16 Availabilty / Tillgänglighet / TIL

18 Operator / Operatör / OPE
19 Abstract / Abstract / ABS
20 Linked information / Länkad information / LNK
21 Indexing information / Indexeringsuppgift / IDX

Browse page
Browsing means scanning the search index lists for a field from the menu (list box). Those fields are the same as in advanced search mode (see list of fields). The term you type in is the left part of an index word.

Please note: All the words in the index lists are separated i.e. phrases are not applicable here. Therefore is e.g. author's first name separated from the last name etc.

Each word with its left part matching the typed term is shown together with the occurrence frequency of that word. Right truncation is presumed here and therefore asterisks (*) need not be used.

A click on a term starts a simple search on that term automatically.

Result page
Result pages show the list of hits in one of three formats - ”brief”, ”normal” and ”full records”.

The option ”brief” shows only the titles and publication date, preceded by a sequence number followed by an identifier of GeoRegister at SGU (”SGU-1”) and the document number.

The option ”normal” shows ”brief” plus the Author, ID-code, Other bibliographic information, Subject and Operator.

The option ”full records” shows all information about a document, empty fields eliminated. A click on a result title always gives ”full records” format. There are up to twenty fields in a full document (see list of fields).

About the system
The search engine on the Web server at SGU is Zebra from Index Data in Denmark. Zebra is a complete fielded, free-text indexing and retrieval system with a Z39.50 frontend.

The source database of GeoRegister is located inside the firewall and implemented in Lotus Notes/Domino. Documents in HTML-format are replicated to the Web server regularly.
